Dis/connection: Violence, Religion, and Geographic Imaginings in Aceh and Colonial Indonesia, 1890s–1920s

چکیده

This article draws attention to the case of Aceh analyse mechanisms through which ideologically driven geographic imaginings obscured role place and class in colonial anti-colonial violence Indonesia. Its main perspective is region's West Coast. In course long brutal Dutch-Acehnese war (1873–1942), Coast Sumatra was transformed from a dynamic centre trade, commerce, religious renewal into frontier. Violent resistance persisted this area as Dutch involved themselves exacerbated local contestations for authority resources. Colonial discourse worked conceal these complexities, foregrounding an image remote, backwards, inherently dangerous place, prone violent Muslim millenarianism.
